My brave move

It's been 3 weeks since I made "the decision". Here is the story:

I am leaving UW Madison.

NO! I am not flunking school (I have my NIH grant to support myself).

This thought has seeded in me since Feb/March when I first sensed the incompentency of my advisor's research ability. He's a nice guy, but he simply does not deserve the faculty position in my department. He lacks the vision, knowledge, and skills for bioscience. Previous group members of ours took longer to graduate and they had a hard time getting a job, which is unimaginable for our department graduates. If I stay on longer, my next 4 years of study will be meaningless.
So, I've been planning on transfering to another group. which I'll contact the professors whose reseach interest me around this weekend and see if they can take me in without going through the normal application process. The chance seems pretty slim. The most likely schedule of mine for next year is to work while reapplying to graduate school.

Btw, I'm feeling ok. Actually, a bit glad of getting outta here when seeing how my group members have suffered. I think life in Berkeley has made me a stronger and confident person than before.

I'll tell my boss this Friday morning about quitting. I hope he doesn't cry. (our group is running out of money and people)

I'll be back to So-Cal around end of August and either work in a biotech firm or a bio lab.

Anyone has experiences or insider tips about writing letters to Professors to ask them to take me in without going through the normal application process?

That is very Sweet of you, Ari. I don't know...I might feel pretty low if I go back to Berkeley, which is where I left off. I felt pretty stagnant last year in Madison cuz' my peers weren't active outside of school; I kinda envy people who were still in college. It has always been an encouragement to see something new going on in your lives.
I think going to a new place will help me in this transition, I hope.
